'Moonflower'
An arrangement for guitar by Don King
I wrote this little solo some time ago and I am very pleased with how well it has worked with beginners. I have found that many students like it so much that they keep playing it long after they have passed the early stages of learning.
Because I made use of the four open strings and the E minor sonority of the guitar, the piece fits very comfortably under the fingers and sounds a lot harder than it actually is (about 75% of the notes are open strings).
To give the piece some dramatic tension and resolution the main theme employs the minor 6th and 9th dissonances and their resolutions.
I have provided step-by-step study notes. And if these steps are followed carefully your students will find the piece very accessible and enjoyable.
This piece is suitable for students who are nearing the end of Play the Guitar Book One.

'Autumn Leaves'
Guitar Solo arrangement by Don King
Lately I have been enjoying arranging some of the marvellous jazz standards from “the Great American Songbook” – George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, and Jimmy McHugh etc.
When making this type of arrangement my philosophy is “less is more because I want the student/performer to be able to focus on creating a beautiful sounding melody line. As a counter to the melody, I always aim to create an effective moving bass line with strong leading notes, and to utilise the essential jazz harmonies on the inner voices. Above all I aim to make the arrangements accessible and enjoyable to play for my students.
Encourage your students to read the study notes because it will give them an understanding of how the music works plus interpretation ideas.

'Stairway to Heaven'
Guitar Quartet arrangement by Don King
Because I keep getting requests for the quartet arrangement that I did way back in 1991 of the iconic Stairway to heaven, I have included it in this issue (my apologies if you already have it).
